Extension Kits are used to keep the ramp from becoming too steep when used in tidal water or fixed docks, when the distance from the mounting platform to the top of the water is too great.  They also increase the buoyancy for heavier dogs.

Extensions are especially helpful to senior dogs or dogs with joint problems. It decreases the angle making the ramp less steep.
